Lao Tzu's Work

Lao Tzu wrote the book Tao Te Ching, the central book of Taoism. The book is written in poetry in 81 chapters making the book relatively short. In the book Lao Tzu speaks of a mysterious thing called the Tao that has no name but when Lao Tzu is forced to name it, he calls it Tao. The Tao can never been sensed with any of the 5 senses and is perfect and forever.

Lao Tzu Biography

It is believed that Lao Tzu worked as the Keeper of the Archives for the royal court of Zhou in the 6th century BC. This allowed him to read a lot which helped him gain wisdom. He never set up a school but had many followers. After many years he saw the decline in the kingdom and decided to go out and become a hermit. He was recognized by a guard when he was leaving through the Western gate of the city/kingdom and stopped. The guard asked Lao Tzu to record his wisdom which became his book Tao Te Ching.

Lao Tzu translates as Old master.

Lao Tzu is usually pictured riding a water buffalo.

1. Yangtze River Delta: Covers 99600 sq km between Shanghai, the Jiangsu Province, and Zhejiang. It has 21% of China's GDP. It encompasses over 80 million people who mostly speak Wu Chinese. The region has been one of the most populous areas of China since the 9th century and continues to be so today. The weather there is mostly warm and humid.

2. Pearl River Delta: In Southern China near the Pearl River. Encompasses about 60 million people. Up until the 1980s it was mainly a farming area. Today it is known for its manufacturing.

3. Hebei: The region surrounds Beijing and Tianjin, two of the largest cities in China. The region has over 39 million people. It lies in the North China Plain with a continental monsoon climate.

4. Liaoning: The region is in the northeastern province of China. It encompasses over 33 million people. It was one of the first provinces in China to industrialize. Its has highlands in the west, plains in the middle, and hills in the east.

5. Taiwan: Over 18 million people. It is an island in East Asia and since 1945 has been under Chinese rule. It has a large technology industry.

It borders the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea.
